This specially commissioned oil painting interprets "The Landing of HRH The Princess Alexandra at Gravesend, 7th March 1863," in the style of Henry Nelson O'Neil. The original painting captures the significant moment when Princess Alexandra of Denmark arrived in England. To conclude her marriage to the Prince of Wales, later known as Edward VII.

The painting depicts the bustling scene at Gravesend's Terrace Pier as the Princess firstly disembarks from the royal yacht Victoria and Albert. Leading his fiancée, the Prince of Wales is at the forefront, with over fifty figures surrounding them. Including the parents of Princess Alexandra, the future King and Queen of Denmark, and additional Danish royal family members. A host of officials and dignitaries also accompany them, adding to the grandeur of the event.

Housekeepers dressed in striking red capes are positioned on each side of the pier, holding baskets filled with spring flowers, ready to scatter them at the feet of the arriving Princess. The painting skilfully captures the celebratory and historic atmosphere, portraying the moment with a sense of occasion and festivity.
